In 2014, when Michelle Nunez became Miss San Pedro, she knew that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of young women. She created the SHINE (Shaping Healthy Identities through Nurturing and Empowerment) Program where girls from 13-17 learn about healthy self concepts, drug awareness and healthy relationships. Hope Haven plays host to a community worship service by livestreaming Cornwall Church of Bellingham, Wa. at 9:45 am on Sundays for a 10:00 am worship session. Coffee and snacks are available
Hope Haven has partnered with Martin Dawson to offer quarterly Basic Self Defense classes to young girls and women.
A two week preventative program for girls 13-18 focused on Teen Dating Abuse. Our Goal is to instill in these girls a great sense of worth and self confidence to be able to identify red flags in their relationships and learn to walk away before it is too late.
Each girl was partnered with a strong, successful woman of the community who will serve as their mentor.
While learning about teen dating abuse and how to seek help, the girls were also educated in positive coping techniques such as yoga, meditation, interpretive drawing and self-defense to name a few.
Ballet classes are offered to 4 year old girls who attend ABC Preschool on Wednesday and Thursdays. During this class they learn the discipline of dance and prepare for their end of year recital.
This year, we had a 12 year old dancer from Miami, Fl come in to teach a week of ballet classes to the girls residing in the shelter.
